3 Year Trinity Level 6 Diploma in Musical Theatre

Students follow the curriculum for the Trinity College London Level 6 Diploma in Professional Musical Theatre.

Within the National Qualification Framework, these Diplomas carry a Level 6 rating thus giving Graduates the opportunity, at any time in the future, to convert to a BA(Hons) in Professional Practice, currently offered by Middlesex University – course code 135W291.   Students may major in any 2 dance subjects or in Acting.

SLP College has been invited to offer places under the Government Dance and Drama Award Scheme. 

Students will be assessed twice yearly and on completion and passing of all elements of the course students will graduate with the SLP Diploma. Dance and Drama Award students having passed all elements of the course will be awarded the Level 6 Diploma in Musical Theatre . All other students have the option by paying the Trinity examination fee to be entered for this additional diploma.

Integrated Professional Studies will include:

  • Musical Theatre studies including development of independent research skills

Additionally to the core subjects students will:

  • Develop their knowledge of Professional Practice and Professional Skills required for the profession
  • Research and explore Audition Technique and employment opportunities
  • Have an understanding of  Anatomy and Nutrition which will in turn develop the knowledge, understanding and awareness of the body, how it functions in relation to dance, drama and singing and how to avoid injury
  • Develop their levels of fitness and tone their bodies through guided fitness programmes, aerobics, yoga and Pilates
  • Develop their knowledge of Professional Practice within the industry, including Health and Safety issues
  • Work with top guest choreographers in workshops throughout the year in all years

 

Dance

Within the dance element the following subjects are taught:

Classical Ballet
There are specialist boys classes for partnering and pas de deux. Students have the option to take RAD major examinations. Male and female staff members, all former professional dancers, take these classes.

Jazz
The basis of great jazz is a sound technique coupled with the opportunity to develop one’s individual style. All varying styles are taught by male and female staff who are working as either choreographers or performers within the industry. Musical Theatre Dance, Commercial, Contemporary, Street Dance, Hip Hop and Heeled Jazz for girls. Boys have specialist classes. Partnering.

Modern Jazz Technique
The  weekly class in year one is used to build up a foundation to develop basic disciplines, including rhythm and an understanding of music and anatomical technique in relation to dance.

Tap
Technical Tap classes from basic to advanced and Creative Freestyle are taught. Tap workshops are also taken by West End choreographers. Tap repertoire is an important element of this training and the course offers a strong foundation for the type of tap now required by leading choreographers. Students have the option to take ISTD major examinations.


Singing

The following subjects are taught within the singing element of the course:
All singing staff are classically trained and have knowledge and training in the Estill singing method.
Technical classes are taught in groups of four or five students.
Musical Theatre repertoire is also taught in small groups with large group singing for productions.

Acting

The following subjects are taught within the acting element of the course:

  • Acting (text-based and devised),
  • Voice and Speech
  • Vocabulary of acting technique
  • Analysis of  texts
  • Warm-up techniques
  • Physical skills in performance

Texts by classical and contemporary playwrights are studied to provide an understanding of text-based acting through  the development of the acting skills of voice and movement. These skills are applied through rehearsal and performance of libretti and non-musical dramatic texts to enable the students to develop an understanding of a variety of dramatic styles and their corresponding elements of acting technique.

Students can opt to take LAMDA examinations.
